Sewing Project: Gathered Skirt

I whipped up this skirt last weekend with some vintage fabric I found at the Goodwill a while back. Something about this light blue fabric just seemed perfect for a dirndl-style skirt. I used Gertie’s great tutorial on her blog (find the link here), but modified it just a little. My fabric was pretty narrow, so I sewed it in three panels rather than one single piece. Instead of an invisible side zipper, I decided to do a regular back zipper topped with two hooks on the waistband. I hand hemmed it with a 3 inch wide hem. I also tried out this method for gathering the skirt and I have to say I’m very happy with the results- the gathers were very small and even and sewed up nicely!

Anyway, the tutorial was very simple and straightforward and the skirt is perfect for the summer heat- cool and comfortable. I’ll definitely be making another gathered skirt sometime soon!

Hope everyone’s having a great week so far! I’m still adjusting to my new (earlier) work schedule, so I’ve been in a bit of a fog the last couple of weeks. Well, thank heavens for coffee!

Thanks for looking!
